Solar Tracker vs Fixed-Tilt: Choosing the Right Mounting System for Your PV Plant
Choosing the mounting structure is one of the key decisions in a ground-mounted PV investment. A single-axis solar tracker produces more but needs more investment; a fixed-tilt system is simpler and cheaper. The right choice depends on your site and your investment goals.
Production profile: the shoulder-hour difference
A fixed-tilt system has a narrow production curve that peaks at noon. A tracker turns the modules towards the sun in the morning and evening and widens the curve, so annual yield typically rises by 15–25%. In markets with high morning and evening prices, or in self-consumption plants with high demand at those hours, the value of a tracker is even higher.
Comparison table
| Criterion | Tracker (single-axis) | Fixed-tilt |
|---|---|---|
| Annual yield | Typically 15–25% higher | Reference |
| Initial investment | Usually 8–12% higher | Lower |
| LCOE (cost per kWh) | Usually lower on sunny sites | Competitive on cloudy or low-irradiance sites |
| Land use | Wider row spacing, slightly less capacity per hectare | Denser layout possible |
| Slope tolerance | Typically 10–15% along the axis | More tolerant |
| Maintenance | Motors, controllers, batteries | Minimal moving parts |
| Wind / snow | Managed with stow and snow modes | Passive, by structural design |

How much more does a tracker produce? (simulation data)
We simulated the same plant at 13 sites in the main tracker markets and 12 sites in Türkiye, once with single-axis trackers and once with fixed-tilt racking (PVGIS hourly weather, 710 W bifacial modules, identical loss assumptions). The median gain at the international sites was 22.2%; clear-sky regions such as the US Southwest reached 24–26%, while hazy or cloudy climates gained much less.
| Location | Fixed (kWh/kWp·yr) | Tracker (kWh/kWp·yr) | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix, Arizona (US) | 2,030 | 2,551 | +25.7% |
| Midland, Texas (US) | 1,928 | 2,402 | +24.5% |
| Seville (Spain) | 1,862 | 2,274 | +22.2% |
| Atacama (Chile) | 2,313 | 2,823 | +22.1% |
| Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) | 2,042 | 2,402 | +17.6% |
| Bavaria (Germany) | 1,318 | 1,486 | +12.8% |

When is a tracker more profitable?
- Regions with high direct irradiance and many clear-sky days
- Large, low-slope land
- Projects using bifacial modules
- Projects with high morning and evening prices or consumption
When does fixed-tilt make sense?
- Sloped or uneven land where grading would be expensive
- Limited land where the goal is the highest capacity per hectare
- Remote sites where maintenance access is difficult
- Rooftops and very small installations
Metrics to use for the decision
When comparing a tracker with fixed-tilt, look beyond the investment amount: compare LCOE, NPV, IRR, the discounted payback period and the return on the tracker's extra investment on its own (incremental analysis). Our simulator calculates both systems side by side with the same site, the same weather data and the same financial assumptions.
Frequently asked questions
Is a solar tracker or a fixed-tilt system more profitable?
On sunny, large and low-slope land, trackers usually deliver a lower cost per kWh (LCOE) and a higher NPV. On sloped, uneven or limited land, fixed-tilt can make more sense. A site-specific simulation is needed for a firm decision.
Does a tracker fit fewer panels on the same land?
Tracker rows are spaced further apart to avoid shading each other, so the capacity installed on the same land can be somewhat lower than with fixed-tilt. In return, the yield per module is higher.
