How Much Land Does a 1 MW Solar Tracker Plant Need? GCR, Module Power and Yield Data

BTR Enerji Engineering Team · Published: 31 October 2026 · 7 min read

With the default design (GCR 0.32, 710 W modules) 1 MWp of single-axis trackers needs about 1.66 hectares (4.1 acres), while the same fixed-tilt capacity fits on 0.97–1.09 ha at Turkish latitudes. These are net areas, excluding roads, fencing and transformer allowance. On a real rectangular parcel with full layout we get 1.53–1.60 ha/MWp, or 1.84–1.95 ha/MWac. All figures come from our own simulator: they are calculations, not measurements.

Short answer: how much land per MW?

Slope, parcel shape, obstacles and module power all change these numbers. To see the real table layout for your own parcel, draw it in the simulator below.

Land and annual yield by site

We simulated the same 1 MWp plant at each site with a PVGIS typical meteorological year. At the default GCR the tracker land use stays constant; for fixed tilt, rows open up as the winter sun gets lower.

Land figures are net layout area, excluding setbacks, roads, fencing and the transformer site. The fixed-tilt GCR is set by latitude so that rows do not shade each other at winter-solstice noon. More sites: solar tracker energy gain by location. Production by month and hour: how much energy does 1 MW of trackers produce?

Why does a tracker need more land?

A tracker turns towards the low morning and evening sun, so rows must be spaced further apart to avoid shading each other. In Konya the tracker uses about 1.7 times the land of fixed tilt for the same 1 MWp, and in return produces 21% more energy. As a result fixed tilt leads on energy per hectare: 1,323 MWh/ha for the tracker against 1,828 MWh/ha for fixed tilt.

So the choice depends on how scarce the land is. Where land is cheap and grid capacity is the limit, the tracker's higher output per MW wins; where land is very expensive or the parcel is narrow, consider fixed tilt or a denser tracker layout.

How does GCR change the land requirement?

As GCR (module width / row pitch) rises, tables sit closer together. We simulated the same site in Konya at different GCR values:

GCRRow pitch (m)Land (ha/MWp)Land (acres/MWp)Yield of 1 MWp (MWh/yr)Yield per hectare (MWh/yr)

Figure 1 – As GCR rises, land per MWp falls and yield per hectare rises (Konya, 710 W modules).

Moving from GCR 0.30 to 0.50 cuts land per MWp by 40%, while yield per MWp falls only 7% and yield per hectare rises 55%. Small ripples in the table come from inverter sizing. Land price decides the best point: GCR optimization: LCOE or NPV?

How does module power change it?

Higher power per module means the same MWp fits on fewer modules and tables. In Konya, with the same table type and GCR: 2.14 ha/MWp at 550 W, 1.90 ha/MWp at 620 W and 1.66 ha/MWp at 710 W. Rules of thumb carried over from older projects can therefore overstate the land needed with today's high-power modules.

How many MW fit on a real parcel?

On a drawn parcel the layout engine places every table individually and leaves a 3 m boundary setback, 5 m service roads on larger sites and a transformer area. Results for flat rectangular parcels in Konya:

Site areaDC powerAC powerTablesha/MWpha/MWacAnnual yield
5 ha (12 acres)3.22 MWp2.70 MWac961.551.857,023 MWh
10 ha (25 acres)6.26 MWp5.12 MWac1591.601.9513,522 MWh
20 ha (49 acres)13.06 MWp10.88 MWac3301.531.8428,418 MWh

Do not mix MWp and MWac: grid permits are usually stated in AC, module power in DC. With a DC/AC ratio near 1.2, the land for 1 MWac is larger than for 1 MWp by about that ratio. How the ratio affects yield: solar tracker DC/AC ratio and clipping.

What makes these numbers bigger?

Method

Simulations used our pvlib-based tool: PVGIS typical meteorological year, hourly calculation, 710 W bifacial modules, ±55° rotation with backtracking, default temperature, soiling, cabling and inverter losses. Land figures are for flat ground. Results are simulations, not measurements; zoning, cadastre and grid conditions must be checked separately.

Frequently asked questions

How many acres does 1 MW of solar trackers need?

With 710 W modules, about 4.1 acres (1.66 ha) per MWp of net layout area at GCR 0.32. On a real parcel with setbacks and roads we get 3.8–3.9 acres per MWp.

How many MW of trackers fit on 10 hectares?

On a flat rectangular 10 ha parcel in Konya, our simulation fitted 6.26 MWp (5.12 MWac) producing about 13,522 MWh a year.

How much energy does 1 MW of trackers produce per year?

In our simulations 1 MWp of trackers produced between 1,672 MWh (Bucharest) and 2,404 MWh (Riyadh) a year.

Do trackers use more land than fixed tilt?

Yes. In Konya a tracker uses about 1.7 times the land of fixed tilt for the same MWp and produces 21% more energy. The right choice depends on land price and grid capacity.
